Plan Lesson Content

Before using the editor, plan your content for a clear, logical structure that engages learners.

In this article, you will learn how to:

Start with a Goal

Each exploration should have a clear, measurable question that the learner can answer by the end.

  • Example: “What is the decimal equivalent of 1/2?”

By working backwards from this goal, you can ensure that every lesson card moves the learner towards having the necessary understanding to answer such questions in the future.

Build a Lesson Path

Your lesson path uses supporting questions and answers to deepen learners’ understanding. For the decimal example, this might involve comparing fractions and decimals or examining place values.

While you will always have a “Main Path,” Oppia’s :doc:lesson design tools </creators/lesson-design-tools> allow you to create a dynamic experience:

  • Lesson Branches: Divert learners to extra help if they get a specific answer wrong.

  • Loops: Send learners back to a previous question if they need a refresher.

  • Shortcuts: Allow advanced learners to skip ahead if they demonstrate mastery early.

Boost Engagement with Storytelling

Storytelling helps learners apply abstract concepts to real-world situations. Instead of presenting dry mathematical expressions, frame your lesson as a narrative.

  • Standard Approach: “What is 5 + 2?”

  • Storytelling Approach: “Mike’s friend Linda asks him how many toys they have together if Mike has 5 toys and Linda has 2?”

You can also create a cohesive narrative across multiple explorations by using :doc:stories and chapters </creators/outline-a-story>. This keeps learners coming back to find out what happens next to the characters they’ve met.
